He’s been in the business for a while, this James figure. After a couple of smaller releases, he contributed with two tracks on the greatly embraced ”John Barleycorn Reborn” mastodon compilation. After that, or maybe meanwhile, he started up the label which released this single, Autumn Ferment Records. And now then, as you should know if I’ve not made myself very unclear, this ”Tale Between the Tides” 7” is released.
Well, I can’t say much about it other than that it’s a great purchase if you like to hear some fresh experimental, psychedelic folk. Sometimes it sounds as a complete TUNNG ripoff BUT KNOW THAT’S A GOOD THING BEFORE YOU START COMPLAINING. I’ve always been on the quest for something that could compete with TUNNG’s two first albums but nothing has ever been near them, so be it a ripoff but it’s still an original and brave approach to folk music and I like it a lot.
We are presented two tracks, one on each side. The first one, ”She Waits by the Shore”, starts with some clanking sounds, bird tweets and some of those clicking sounds you should be familiar with if you’ve ever heard TUNNG. A hypnotic and sparse guitar melody kicks in right before James starts singing with his raspy, passionate voice. That’s pretty much the deal with the whole track. Something that could be an accordion helps to separate the verses from choruses.
The second track is called ”Wandering Man” and I know you’re getting tired of my TUNNG comparisons by now, but this one could actually be taken right out of ”Comments of the Inner Chorus”. A great track, nice tempo, nice guitars, nice vocals, nice presentation of it all, and nice twists.
I could actually not recommend this more. Been searching for something like it for a while, and I look forward to hear what James could put out in the future.
